Christchurch Earthquake

Our thoughts go out to our friends and relatives down in the Christchurch area.  Another strong earthquake has caused a lot of damage to the central business area.  Early reports suggest that this event likely caused several fatalities.  ASR scientist Jose Borrero commented on the earthquake for Al Jazeera news in a live broadcast on tuesday afternoon.  Despite being much smaller in magnitude than the September 2010 earthquake, this event was much closer to the centre of the city and caused more damage.
